Taxi licence medicals

image151

The rules for taxi drivers are slightly different to those of bus and lorry drivers. The recommendation from the department of transport is that a taxi driver must meet the same standards as those of bus and lorry drivers but individual local authorities determines what the medical consists of and who can do it so please check with your local authority to make sure that any registered doctor can perform the medical and not just your GP. You may need to get your medical summary  from your GP to bring to your appointment.

PCV/bus medicals

There are special licensing arrangements allowing you to drive minibuses and buses without holding the higher Passenger Carrying Vehicle (PCV) driving licence entitlement. Drivers of minibuses having nine to 16 passenger seats will need to hold a PCV licence category D1 or a category D licence to drive larger buses.

FORKLIFT TRUCK AND CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY MEDICALS

image154

There is no official legislation regarding medical screening of  fork lift truck operators, crane operators  or others in the construction injury. However, it is good practice and may be needed for insurance purposes to ensure operators are medically fit before operating a fork lift truck.

It is advisable to repeat this at regular intervals up until the age of 40 and thereafter at five-yearly intervals up to the age of 65. Operators over 65 should be screened annually.

A medical examination is also recommended in all cases after an accident or sickness absence that has been longer than 1 month and also after short periods of sickness if the illness may affect fitness to operate the fork lift truck.

MOTORSPORTS MEDICALS

image155

A motorsport medical (MSAUK Motor Sport Medical) is needed to establish if the driver is safe to compete and doesn’t pose a threat to the safety of others competing. Some medicals require a resting ECG but unfortunately, this is not a service we currently provide.

AMBULANCE MEDICALS

image156

  • All students and current paramedics/ambulance technicians who passed their driving test after 1996 require a DVLA D4 medical examination in order to get a class 1 licence to drive an ambulance. (those who passed before 1997 have this category already included).

What does a medical entail?

image157

The HGV medical is comprised of two parts:

  • The first part is an interview in which the doctor and candidate discuss any existing medical conditions that may interfere with safe driving. Medical history is also discussed. Candidates are expected to be upfront and honest during this discussion. consequences.
  • The second part of the medical is a  physical examination in which the doctor will check the candidate’s vision, Blood pressure, weight and height.
  • the whole process usually takes 20 minutes, there are no blood tests or intimate examinations and any concerns will be raised and discussed.
  • PLEASE REMEMBER THE DOCTOR DOES NOT DECIDE IF YOU ARE FIT TO GET THE LICENCE, THE DVLA ARE.
